VLESS Reality vs Hysteria2: which VPN protocol to use in 2026

5 min readРусская версия

Most services hand you two protocols in one subscription: VLESS Reality and Hysteria2. The second one is not a spare copy. They run on different transports, and each covers a case where the other struggles.

VLESS Reality (TCP)

Runs over TCP. To anything watching the connection, it looks like ordinary HTTPS traffic to a normal website. It works on most networks and keeps latency low. This is the default profile.

Hysteria2 (UDP/QUIC)

Runs over UDP, using the QUIC protocol. Its advantage shows on lossy, congested links — mobile data, a crowded public hotspot: it recovers from packet loss faster than a TCP-based tunnel.

Which one to use

  • Home or office Wi-Fi, wired connection → VLESS Reality.
  • Mobile data, public Wi-Fi, a connection that keeps dropping → Hysteria2 recovers from loss better, but only where the network passes UDP. If it connects and then freezes after about half a minute, UDP is being cut: go back to VLESS Reality.
  • Not sure → stay on VLESS and switch only if you start seeing drops.
The real advantage is having both profiles in one subscription. If one transport does badly on a particular network, you switch to the other in a tap, without changing services. In a ProxysVPN subscription Hysteria2 is a single location, the Netherlands, listed last; every other location runs VLESS Reality, and the United Kingdom and United States also run it over the XHTTP transport (see XHTTP vs gRPC vs TCP). Some mobile carriers in Russia cut UDP, so there pick a VLESS location.

Frequently asked

Which one is faster?

On a wide, stable link usually VLESS: lower overhead and lower latency. On a lossy link Hysteria2 wins, sometimes by a wide margin. Speed follows the quality of the network, not the protocol alone.

Why does Hysteria2 fail where VLESS works?

Almost always because that network restricts or blocks outbound UDP — common on corporate networks and some public Wi-Fi. VLESS runs over TCP and is unaffected.

Can I just use one of them?

Yes, and VLESS Reality is enough for most people. The second profile exists as a fallback for networks that handle TCP badly or drop UDP entirely.

Does the choice affect data usage?

Barely. The overhead differs by a few percent and will not show up on your operator's counter. Battery drain is the more noticeable difference.

Nothing follows from the answer; only we see it.
